S.O. Foreword

It is my honor and pleasure to welcome you all to Saudi Ophthalmology 2018 (SO 2018) a combined meeting of the 30th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Saudi Ophthalmological  Society (SOS) and 35th Annual Symposium of the King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital (KKESH) in association with the Annual Meeting of the Department of Ophthalmology, College of Medicine, King Saud University (KSU).

This combined annual scientific meeting is an educational activity that will provide the delegates with greater platform to discuss ophthalmic issues concerning advanced techniques, modern treatment methods and better vision to raise the scientific standards of ophthalmology personnel, as well as the quality of eye care services provided to our patients.

This year’s exhibition will feature the latest technology from leading companies in the region. The exhibition will cover a wide array of ophthalmic equipments, drugs and supplies.

Since the establishment of SOS on 16th September 1985, being one of the first Saudi Scientific Medical Societies and the only ophthalmological to be formed, ophthalmologists in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the neighboring countries have greatly benefited. Under the leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and Honorary President of SOS HRH Prince Ahmed bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Society continues to strive to achieve its future goals. We continue to unite our efforts and goals to provide the strongest and most comprehensive meeting in the region, in order to better serve ophthalmologists and optometrists.

The SO 2018 will focus on the new developments in:  Cataract, Cornea, Refractive Surgery, Retina, Oculoplastics, Optometry, Prevention of Blindness through lectures, courses, posters and video presentations as well as workshops. We are grateful to our international and local speakers for sharing their clinical experiences and research with us.

The Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology (SJO) is an official journal of the SOS and publishes original research papers, clinical studies, review articles and case reports on a quarterly basis. SJO is indexed with PubMed and SCOPUS – popular scientific databases and search engines. It is also available on Science Direct and SOS website.

I would like to express my personal gratitude to HE Dr Tawfiq bin Fawzan AlRabiah, Minister of Health, Executive Director of KKESH and Dean, College of Medicine and Supervisor of the University Hospitals, KSU for their continuous support of our activities in general and this meeting in particular.  I would also like to thank the Steering, Scientific and Organizing Committees for their genuine efforts and dedication in organizing Saudi Ophthalmology 2018.

Your presence will help us to make this event a grand success. Looking forward to meeting you in Riyadh

KKESH  Foreword

Welcome to Saudi Ophthalmology 2018 “SO2018”. A joint meeting of the 35th Annual Symposium of King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital (KKESH) and the 30th Scientific Meeting of the Saudi Ophthalmological Society (SOS) in collaboration with King Saud University (KSU). Since its first meeting in 1982, KKESH has played a major role in leading the organization of international ophthalmic meetings in Saudi Arabia.

We are proud of our partnership with SOS, led by its visionary leader, HRH Prince Abdulaziz bin Ahmad bin Abdulaziz AlSaud. HRH has led many international efforts in Prevention of Blindness through his position as Chair of the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) in the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB).

KKESH has a long legacy of excellence in ophthalmic care, education and training. So far we have graduated 308 residents (in collaboration with KSU) and 322 sub-specialist ophthalmologists from the Kingdom and 34 from the Gulf countries. In July 2016, KKESH received the institutional and residency program accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education–International (ACGME-I).

In terms of Research, KKESH is the leading institution in the region in the number of published ophthalmic papers in indexed journals. There is a total of 88 submitted projects and 118 published articles for the year 2017. Our emphasis in the coming years will be to expand our research activities and incentivize our staff to initiate more projects. Last year, KKESH was recognized for being the best among medical cities and specialized hospitals in the kingdom in terms of patients’ satisfaction and responsiveness to their needs and complaints filed through the Ministry of Health hotline: 937.

As KKESH moves towards corporatization and the implementation of our country’s Vision 2030, we are determined to play a major role in developing eye care at a national level and positively influencing it regionally. Our main tools to achieve these goals are our team members. Their devotion, hard work and commitment to KKESH is exemplary. KKESH will continue to be “home” for all ophthalmologists in Saudi Arabia and the region. Our expertise and services will be accessible to all.

Finally, I would like to extend our appreciation to our colleagues in SOS and KSU for their effective participation in this conference and the Symposium Committees. Our gratitude extends to our sponsors who have supported this symposium. Not to be forgotten are the many individuals that have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this meeting a success.

Enjoy SO2018 and Riyadh “Ahlan wa Sahlan”
